Days of Blood and Starlight went beyond my expectations. I have never thought that a sequel could be as amazing as the first one! Normally, sequels proceed with a steady romance and a relentless struggle against the evil guys but this one... it completely blew me away.Days of Blood and Starlight was all about VengeanceRevengeViolenceGriefDespair andSeparation . The quote "Reprisal begats reprisal" is very apt for this book. This book is a page turner, a mind - blowing page turner and it will keep you hooked till the very end.If Daughter of Smoke and Bone was a dream then, Days of Blood and Starlight is a nightmare. (For those of you who haven't read the first book proceed with caution.) “Once upon a time, an angel and a devil held a wishbone between them. And its snap split the world in two.” Days of Blood and Starlight starts right off where Daughter of Smoke and Bone ended. Karou is struck with the horrible truth that her family had been murdered by her one true love, Akiva. And she's gone with a cry, leaving Akiva behind, through the portal in the sky.Now, Akiva goes back to his home where his brothers and sisters are, back to the Misbegotten where he belongs. He is revered as the Beast's Bane but all he feels now if grief and loss. Karou was everything for him. Madrigal was. Now, he's lost; he's just a vessel carrying orders. But deep down, he believes he can change, that he can make a change. And so he does. The Beast's Bane makes a change. "Mercy breeds mercySlaughter breeds slaughter." Karou enters the story only after a few chapters looking all tired and gloomy. She's lost too. She doesn't know what to do without her family and friends and Akiva. It's like when they split their wishbone, they split themselves and unleashed chaos. Maybe the wishbone held them together and it's snap split them and the world into two. This book is about all of them - the Angels and the Chimaera. Each and every one of them play a very important role in this book. You get to see both their sides, feel both their love for freedom and vengeance and in the end you will love both the sides and love both their ideas of what is right and wrong. Because that's how the world is. Everything is right and wrong.And the best thing about this book is that there is not much of romance. There's much of separation which will definitely have your heart cracking but I like it when the romance is in the background. It is so much better that way. It makes everything else come to the spotlight. Every tiny detail becomes a major detail and that's how a sequel should be.Laini Taylor's writing is magical. The story feels so real, like there's really a war going on in Elsewhere. Her words and phrases are a work of pure magic - they tug at your heart and leave you wondering about life and war. “Dead souls dream only of death. Small dreams for small men. It is life that expands to fill worlds. Life is your master, or death is” I never wanted to end this book. And the thought that there is only one more book to complete this magnificent trilogy leaves my heart breaking. I already miss Eretz, Karou and Akiva, Mik and Zuzana, the Chimaera and angels. I want more of them but all good things come to an end. Overall, Days of Blood and Starlight is a masterpiece of dreams and nightmares.
